Which Museum on Museum Island? The Comparison

The thing about the Pergamonmuseum
This is the point that causes the most misunderstandings on the island. Very many people book a Museum Island day because they want to see the Pergamon Altar. The Pergamonmuseum has been closed since 23 October 2023 for renovation; the announced reopening date is 4 June 2027 Until then, the Altar cannot be seen, and no ticket variant changes that. What remains is the Pergamon Panorama, a separate stop that's included in the day ticket and in the guided Museum Island tour. Anyone arriving with that expectation should know beforehand — that's why we also say it on is it worth it clearly.
The five museums, briefly sorted
- Neues Museum — Egyptian Museum and Papyrus Collection, Museum of Prehistory and Early History, parts of the Antiquities Collection. This is where the bust of Nefertiti.
- Altes Museum — with the rotunda, the room guided tours head to first, and the "Praying Boy".
- Alte Nationalgalerie — the museum for anyone who isn't much into antiquity.
- Bode-Museum — with the James Simon Cabinet; this is where the guided tours begin.
- Pergamonmuseum — closed until the announced reopening on 4 June 2027.
Added to that are the James-Simon-Galerie as the entrance building for the whole island, Das Panorama and PETRI Berlin. Museum Island as a whole has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.
When the day ticket is the better choice
The Museum Island day ticket is valid for one day and opens five museums: Altes Museum, Neues Museum, Bode-Museum, Alte Nationalgalerie and Das Panorama. Skip-the-line access is stated for the Bode-Museum, Altes Museum, Alte Nationalgalerie and Neues Museum. Audio guides are not included; they're available on-site for an extra fee, and the Pergamonmuseum is closed anyway.
It pays off if you start early and actually enter at least two museums . It doesn't pay off if you only arrive at midday, if you're there exclusively for Nefertiti, or if you're travelling with children whose patience runs out after the second museum. Giorgio from Italy calls the day ticket, on 27 August 2026, a very practical package that gets you into the various museums on the island. Ali from Germany adds a useful caveat on 26 July 2026: you really can spend the whole day there, but most museums close as early as 5pm or 6pm. That's exactly where the ambitious plans fall apart.

Which museums in Berlin are the best?
This question can't be answered without knowing your interests, but for Museum Island there's a useful order. Anyone choosing one museum takes the Neues Museum. Anyone choosing two adds the Alte Nationalgalerie or the Bode-Museum, depending on whether painting or sculpture appeals more. The Altes Museum experience lives mainly on its rotunda. And the Pergamon Altar is out of the picture until 2027. How much of that fits into one day is covered under how much time you need, the ticket variants under Admission and Tickets.
