The Neues Museum stands at Bodestraße 1–3 on Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Friedrich August Stüler built it between 1843 and 1855; the Second World War left it a ruin, and David Chipperfield reassembled the building starting in 1997, reopening it in 2009. The war damage has remained visible, with lost spaces filled in with plain new material. Of the Kaulbach frescoes in the staircase hall, only traces remain. Three collections share the building: the Egyptian Museum and the Papyrus Collection, the Museum of Prehistory and Early History, and parts of the Antiquities Collection. You book a timed-entry slot, not a guided tour. How long you stay is up to you.

Meeting point and entry
Entry is through the visitor entrance of the James-Simon-Galerie on Bodestraße, not at the Neues Museum itself — that is the most common mistake on site. Ticket sales and the cloakroom are also located in the James-Simon-Galerie. Groups enter via the courtyard into the lower foyer. The cancellation policy
This is where it gets uncomfortable: the ticket is non-refundable. The offer does not mention a rebooking window or a grace period. Anyone who has to reckon with a delayed connection, an appointment, or a sick child is better off booking one of the offers with free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance: the guided Museum Island tour, the private tour or the ticket with digital tour. Who it suits, who it doesn't
If your visit is planned around the bust of Nefertiti, there is no more fitting ticket. She stands in the North Dome Room on the second floor, in a room of her own whose green-blue colour scheme sets off her blue crown. On the way there you pass the Berlin Gold Hat, the Green Head and Priam's Treasure. For the highlights you need 45 minutes to around an hour and a half, for a walk through all the floors about 90 minutes, and a thorough visit starts at three hours. Anyone who wants to see several buildings on the island, however, needs a second ticket for this one and is Museum Island ticket better served. And anyone travelling for the Pergamon Altar will come in vain: the Pergamonmuseum has been closed for renovation since 23 October 2023, with 4 June 2027 announced as the reopening date.
